Talk About It Tuesday – Yogurt Maker

I’ve mentioned before that I’m trying to improve our eating habits this year. We’ve pretty much eliminated trans fats from our diet and now I’m working on eliminating high fructose corn syrup. To help with this I’ve started reading the labels while I grocery shop so that I can avoid foods with ingredients I’m working to eliminate. The more I read about all the stuff in our food and what it does to our bodies, the more afraid I am to eat the stuff you can get at the grocery store.

Well, my daughter and I both love yogurt. Since I’ve started reading the labels I’m amazed at how difficult it is to find a good yogurt without a lot of extra “stuff.” Plus, my daughter loves mango yogurt and the grocery stores in this area no longer carry it. So I’ve decided to try making my own yogurt. I figure this way I will know what is in there and the yogurt should be much healthier for us.

For Valentines Day I asked my hubby to get me a Yogurt Maker. (Romantic I know, but it was something I wanted and asked for). It arrived yesterday and I started my first batch of yogurt last night. I won’t be able to try it until tonight. I’m excited to try it because now I can have whatever flavor I want without all the additives. Hubby even picked up some mangoes already so Pumpkin can have her mango yogurt. Oh, and he picked up some blueberries for me. Yum!

If you have any good recipes for home made yogurt, let me know. I don’t really expect to get it perfect on the first try. Knowing me I’ll be tweaking this recipe for awhile until I am happy with it.

  1. I didn’t even know that there was such a thing. But I also am trying to cut out HFCS and noticed that all the yogurts have them. I may have to investigate this further.

  2. I’ll post an update once I try the yogurt letting everyone know how it turned out. I’m very excited to try it and will probably try some tonight instead of waiting for morning (when I usually eat my yogurt)

  3. My mom used to make home made yogurt all the time. I have not, so can’t help in the recipe department. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
